Fresno County's largest industry produces its own pattern of fatal events: equipment, transport, confined spaces, chemicals, and heat, spread across employers, labor contractors, and property owners. This page describes how those cases are structured. Nothing here is legal advice or an offer to represent anyone.

Or call (559) 340-5097The Fresno County Agricultural Commissioner reported that agricultural production values in the county totaled $9,029,122,000 in 2024, calling it the highest value recorded and describing Fresno County as a top agricultural producing county in California and the nation. That figure is context rather than a legal fact, but it explains why a fatal event here is rarely confined to one employer. A single field operation can involve a grower, a management company, a farm labor contractor, a custom harvester, a hauler, a chemical applicator, and an equipment vendor, each with its own records and its own insurance.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported California fatal work injuries by industry for 2024. Within agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, crop production accounted for 13 deaths and support activities for agriculture accounted for 13, and the sector total fell from the prior year's figure of 45. Statewide, falls, slips and trips rose to 94 deaths from 79 the year before, with falls to a lower level making up 81 of them. Exposure to harmful substances or environments accounted for 83 deaths, down from 106 in 2023, with 74 of those involving exposure to harmful substances. Support activities for agriculture is the category that most often means a labor contractor rather than a farm.

The compensation system generally bars a negligence suit against the employer, and that bar has statutory edges. Labor Code section 3706 provides that where an employer fails to secure the payment of compensation, an injured employee may bring an action at law against the employer for damages, as if the compensation statutes did not apply. Labor Code section 3602 keeps a separate set of doors open, including a claim where the injury is aggravated by the employer's fraudulent concealment of the injury and its connection with the employment, and a claim where the injury is caused by a defective product manufactured by the employer and sold or otherwise transferred for valuable consideration to an independent third person. Whether any of that fits a given death is a records question first.

The most consequential question in a Valley field death is often who directed the work. A crew may be paid by a contractor, supervised by a foreman the contractor employs, working on ground controlled by a grower, using equipment owned by a third company, and transported in a vehicle registered to someone else. Each of those relationships generates paper: contracts, invoices, insurance certificates, safety plan acknowledgments, payroll records, and gate or scale logs. The identity of the entity that owed a duty is decided by what those documents show about control, not by whose name was on the paycheck.
Cal/OSHA operates a Fresno District Office at 2550 Mariposa Street, Room 4000, in downtown Fresno, and that office is where a local investigation is typically opened. An investigation produces interviews, photographs, measurements, and sometimes citations. It answers a regulatory question about compliance, not the civil question of who owes a family anything, and a family cannot assume the two will reach the same conclusion. Requesting the investigation file, once it closes, is nonetheless one of the highest-value steps available, because it captures a worksite as it existed on the day.

Government Code section 27491 gives the coroner a duty to inquire into and determine the circumstances, manner, and cause of certain deaths, and the categories it lists include deaths related to or following known or suspected accident or injury, occupational diseases and occupational hazards, and drownings. On a farm death, that means an official file is created independently of the employer's own reporting, and it can preserve details the employer's version omits.

Field operations change quickly. The crop is harvested, the equipment is moved, the crew disperses, and a labor contractor's roster from that week may not be reproducible in a month. Useful items are mundane: the daily assignment, the names and phone numbers of coworkers, photographs of the machine and the ground, the training documents the worker signed, the vehicle used for transport, and the timeline of when supervisors were told what. Written preservation requests to the employer, the contractor, and the property owner cost nothing and shift the burden of an unexplained gap.

Call (559) 340-5097Fresno County Superior Court states that Unlimited Civil cases are heard at the B. F. Sisk Courthouse, 1130 O Street, Fresno, CA 93721.
Why it matters: A wrongful death case can require an Unlimited Civil filing, but venue depends on the case facts. When Fresno Superior Court is the correct venue, the filing goes to the civil division at the B. F. Sisk Courthouse on O Street, and the papers have to match that court's own procedures.

A Fresno County economic study found that agricultural production and processing directly supported 63,103 jobs in 2023.
Why it matters: A local work death may involve a farm, packing operation, processor, labor contractor, transportation provider, equipment maker, or property owner. Preserving the employer, worksite, equipment, and coworker records early helps determine which relationships need to be examined.

The Fresno Irrigation District describes its system as nearly 700 miles of canals and pipeline serving over 200,000 acres of farmland in Fresno County, plus about 980 acres of groundwater recharge facilities.
Why it matters: Open, fast-moving water runs through neighborhoods, farm roads, and worksites across the county. A death in one of those channels raises public property immunity questions with written statutory exceptions that do not arise in an ordinary case.
